Cowherd and Weaver Girl The farmer Cowherd got help from an old divine cow and married the daughter of the Emperor of Heaven, Weaver Girl. The Emperor of Heaven was furious and drew the Milky Way to separate the two. Before dying, the old cow told Cowherd: “Peel off my skin so you can fly to the sky and chase your wife!” The Cowherd wore a cowhide and carried his children to heaven, but the Queen Mother drew the Milky Way with a golden hairpin to block them. The magpie was touched by his love and built a magpie bridge every year on the Qixi Festival to help them meet. The cow has also become a symbol of hard work, perseverance, sacrifice and fulfillment.
